Basis of R^m as columns row equivalent to the identity

Builds on BasisRow equivalenceIdentity matrixMatrix

Statement

Let v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n be vectors in ℝm\mathbb{R}^m. Let AA be the matrix whose columns are v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n.

The vectors v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n form a basis of ℝm\mathbb{R}^m if and only if AA is row equivalent to the identity matrix.

Remarks

The identity matrix is square, so row equivalence to it forces AA to be an m×mm \times m matrix. Hence n=mn = m. Every basis of ℝm\mathbb{R}^m has exactly mm vectors.
