Definition

Let XX be a smooth quasi-projective variety over ℂ\C, let Kn(X)K_n(X) be Quillen's algebraic K-group, and let ψk\psi^k be the Adams operations on Kn(X)⊗ℚK_n(X) \otimes \Q. For integers n≥0n \ge 0 and ii, let Kn(X)ℚ(i)={x∈Kn(X)⊗ℚ:ψk(x)=kix for all k≥1}K_n(X)^{(i)}_\Q = \{ x \in K_n(X) \otimes \Q : \psi^k(x) = k^i x \text{ for all } k \ge 1 \} be the weight ii eigenspace. Let H𝒟j(X,ℝ(i))H^{j}_{\mathcal{D}}(X, \R(i)) be the real Deligne–Beilinson cohomology of XX, defined with differential forms of logarithmic growth along a smooth compactification. The Beilinson regulator is the family of homomorphisms r𝒟 ⁣:Kn(X)ℚ(i)→H𝒟2i−n(X,ℝ(i))r_{\mathcal{D}} \colon K_n(X)^{(i)}_\Q \to H^{2i-n}_{\mathcal{D}}(X, \R(i)) induced by Beilinson's Chern character from algebraic K-theory to Deligne–Beilinson cohomology. For a variety over ℝ\R or over ℚ\Q, one first passes to ℂ\C. Then one takes invariants under complex conjugation, acting on both X(ℂ)X(\C) and the coefficients.

Remarks

The groups Kn(X)ℚ(i)K_n(X)^{(i)}_\Q are the rational motivic cohomology groups Hℳ2i−n(X,ℚ(i))H^{2i-n}_{\mathcal{M}}(X, \Q(i)), so the regulator is a map from motivic to Deligne–Beilinson cohomology.

Example: for n=i=1n = i = 1, K1(X)ℚ(1)=𝒪(X)×⊗ℚK_1(X)^{(1)}_\Q = \mathcal{O}(X)^\times \otimes \Q. The regulator sends a unit ff to the class of log⁡∣f∣\log \abs{f} in H𝒟1(X,ℝ(1))H^1_{\mathcal{D}}(X, \R(1)). For XX a finite set of points, this is the vector of values of log⁡∣f∣\log \abs{f}. For X=Spec⁡FX = \operatorname{Spec} F with FF a number field and n=2m−1n = 2m - 1, i=m≥2i = m \ge 2, Beilinson showed that the regulator agrees with the Borel regulator up to a nonzero rational factor.

The weight decomposition matters: for a field kk, the Adams operation ψj\psi^j acts on K1(k)=k×K_1(k) = k^\times by u↦uju \mapsto u^j. So K1(k)⊗ℚK_1(k) \otimes \Q is entirely of weight 11, and K1(k)ℚ(i)=0K_1(k)^{(i)}_\Q = 0 for i≠1i \ne 1.
