Bending moment
Builds on Stress
Definition
Let a straight beam lie along the -axis, with cross-section in the -plane and centroid of on the axis. Let the beam bend in the -plane, and let be the normal stress on the cross-section at . The bending moment at is Let the beam be in equilibrium. Then equals the moment about of the external forces and couples on the part of the beam to one side of .
Remarks
Here points in the direction of the load, so that a moment that makes the beam sag, with tension on the side , is positive. Example: a simply supported beam of length with a point load at mid-span has support reactions . For the forces to the left of are only the reaction at , with lever arm , so . The largest value is .
Non-example: the integral is the axial force, not the bending moment; it is in pure bending, while is not.
In the Euler–Bernoulli theory the stress is , where is the deflection in the direction of , so , where is the second moment of area. Texts differ in the sign conventions for .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
