Mechanics of deformable solids Foundations of continuum mechanics Concept
Stress
Summary
Stress is force per unit area acting across an imagined surface inside a continuum body. At each point and for each orientation of the surface it gives a vector, the traction, with a normal part and a shear part. Stress is how internal forces are described in continuum mechanics, and the condition that it stays below a limit governs the design of structures.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
