Definition
Let a continuum body occupy an open set at some time, and let be the set of unit vectors of . A stress field (in the sense of Cauchy) on is a traction field with the following meaning. Let , and take a smooth oriented surface through with unit normal at . The material on the side into which points exerts a force on the material on the other side. The force per unit area of this action at is . The normal stress on the surface is , and the shear stress is the vector .
Remarks
In a fluid at rest with pressure , the traction is : the normal stress is and the shear stress is . In a bar along the first axis under a tensile force spread uniformly over the cross-section area , the traction on a cross-section with is . Gravity is not a stress: it acts on the volume of the material, not across surfaces, and is described by a body force per unit mass. The assumption that depends on the surface only through its normal is Cauchy's stress principle; Cauchy's stress theorem then shows that is linear in . Stress has the units of pressure, the pascal .
