Definition

Let RR be an integral domain. RR is a Bézout domain if every finitely generated ideal of RR is principal.

Remarks

Equivalent form: for all a,b∈Ra, b \in R the ideal (a,b)(a, b) is principal; the general case follows by induction on the number of generators. Then (a,b)=(d)(a, b) = (d) for a gcd dd of aa and bb, and d=ax+byd = ax + by for some x,y∈Rx, y \in R. Example: every principal ideal domain, such as ℤ\Z or ℚ[x]\Q[x], is a Bézout domain. Non-example: in ℤ[x]\Z[x] the ideal (2,x)(2, x) is not principal. A generator would divide 22, so it would be ±1\pm 1 or ±2\pm 2. But (2,x)≠ℤ[x](2, x) \ne \Z[x], because its elements have even constant term, and 22 does not divide xx. A Bézout domain is a GCD domain; a Noetherian Bézout domain is a principal ideal domain.
