Big Bang nucleosynthesis
Builds on Friedmann equationsScale factorBoltzmann distribution
Definition
Consider a hot expanding universe described by the Friedmann equations. Its temperature falls as the inverse of the scale factor. Big Bang nucleosynthesis is the network of nuclear reactions that acts between temperatures of about MeV and keV. It converts free protons and neutrons into the light nuclei , , and . Its output is the set of primordial abundances of these nuclei, as functions of the baryon-to-photon ratio and of the expansion rate.
Remarks
The main steps are as follows. While weak interactions are fast, the neutron-to-proton ratio follows the Boltzmann distribution , with MeV the neutron-proton mass difference. The weak rates freeze out near MeV, leaving , which neutron decay lowers to about . Deuterium is destroyed by the many photons until drops to about MeV; then nearly all neutrons are bound into .
Example: if all neutrons end in and , the helium mass fraction is Check: each helium nucleus has two neutrons and two protons, so the helium mass is about twice the neutron mass, in units of the nucleon mass.
Non-example: the formation of carbon and heavier elements does not belong to Big Bang nucleosynthesis. There are no stable nuclei of mass or , and the density falls too fast, so heavier elements are made later in stars.
