Bimodule

Builds on RingModule over a ring

Definition

Let RR and SS be rings. An (R,S)(R, S)-bimodule is an abelian group MM with these structures:

  1. a left RR-module structure (r,m)↦rm(r, m) \mapsto rm;
  2. a right SS-module structure (m,s)↦ms(m, s) \mapsto ms;
  3. the compatibility (rm)s=r(ms)(rm)s = r(ms) for all r∈Rr \in R, m∈Mm \in M and s∈Ss \in S.

Remarks

An (R,R)(R, R)-bimodule is also called an RR-bimodule. Example: for a field KK, the space Mm×n(K)M_{m \times n}(K) of m×nm \times n matrices is an (Mm(K),Mn(K))(M_m(K), M_n(K))-bimodule under matrix multiplication. Clauses 1 and 2 are the usual rules of matrix arithmetic, and clause 3 is associativity (AX)B=A(XB)(AX)B = A(XB). Every ring RR is an RR-bimodule, and its sub-bimodules are its two-sided ideals. Non-example: let RR be a noncommutative ring and give RR the "right action" m⋅s=smm \cdot s = sm. This fails clause 2, since (m⋅s)⋅t=tsm(m \cdot s) \cdot t = tsm while m⋅(st)=stmm \cdot (st) = stm, and ts≠stts \ne st for some s,ts, t. For a commutative ring KK, every KK-module is a KK-bimodule with mk=kmmk = km.
