Biot number
Builds on Dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanicsHeat transfer coefficientThermal conductivity
Definition
Let a solid body of thermal conductivity exchange heat with a fluid through its surface, with heat transfer coefficient . Let be a characteristic length of the body. The Biot number is the dimensionless number
Remarks
A common choice of length is , the volume of the body divided by its surface area.
Example: a steel ball of radius metres with , cooled in air with , in SI units. Then , so , which is far below .
Non-example: the ratio with the conductivity of the fluid instead of the solid is not the Biot number. It is the Nusselt number.
When , the rule of thumb in engineering is that the temperature inside the body is nearly uniform.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
