Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a time-oriented spacetime that is asymptotically flat at null infinity. So there is a conformal compactification (M~,g~)(\tilde M, \tilde g) of (M,g)(M, g), as in a Penrose diagram, whose boundary contains future null infinity ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+. Let J−(ℐ+)J^-(\mathcal{I}^+) be the causal past of ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+ in M~\tilde M: the set of points from which some future-directed causal curve reaches ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+. The black hole region of (M,g)(M, g) is ℬ=M∖J−(ℐ+).\mathcal{B} = M \setminus J^-(\mathcal{I}^+). The spacetime contains a black hole if ℬ\mathcal{B} is nonempty. If Σ\Sigma is a Cauchy surface of MM, a black hole at the time Σ\Sigma is a connected component of ℬ∩Σ\mathcal{B} \cap \Sigma.

Remarks

Example: the Schwarzschild spacetime of mass mm in ingoing Eddington–Finkelstein coordinates, with r>0r > 0. From a point with r>2mr > 2m, an outgoing radial light ray reaches ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+. From a point with r≤2mr \le 2m, every future-directed causal curve has rr non-increasing, so it never reaches ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+. Hence ℬ={0<r≤2m}\mathcal{B} = \set{0 < r \le 2m}, and its boundary is the sphere r=2mr = 2m.

Non-example: in Minkowski space, from every point a light ray goes out to ℐ+\mathcal{I}^+, so J−(ℐ+)⊇MJ^-(\mathcal{I}^+) \supseteq M and ℬ\mathcal{B} is empty.

The boundary of ℬ\mathcal{B} in MM is the event horizon. Many texts add a further condition, such as strong asymptotic predictability, to obtain good properties of black holes, for example in the Hawking area theorem. The definition is global in time: deciding whether a point lies in ℬ\mathcal{B} requires knowing the whole future of the spacetime.
