Definition

Let a1,…,ana_1, \dots, a_n be bosonic annihilation operators with adjoints a1∗,…,an∗a_1^*, \dots, a_n^*, so that [aj,ak∗]=δjk[a_j, a_k^*] = \delta_{jk} and [aj,ak]=0[a_j, a_k] = 0 for all j,kj, k. Let UU and VV be complex n×nn \times n matrices, and set bi=∑j=1n(Uij aj+Vij aj∗),i=1,…,n.b_i = \sum_{j=1}^n \big( U_{ij}\, a_j + V_{ij}\, a_j^* \big), \qquad i = 1, \dots, n. This is a Bogoliubov transformation if the bib_i satisfy the same relations, [bi,bk∗]=δik[b_i, b_k^*] = \delta_{ik} and [bi,bk]=0[b_i, b_k] = 0. This holds if and only if UU∗−VV∗=IandUVT−VUT=0,U U^* - V V^* = I \quad\text{and}\quad U V^T - V U^T = 0, where U∗U^* is the conjugate transpose and UTU^T the transpose of UU. For fermionic operators, which satisfy the canonical anticommutation relations, the definition uses anticommutators instead. Then the condition becomes UU∗+VV∗=IU U^* + V V^* = I and UVT+VUT=0U V^T + V U^T = 0.

Remarks

The conditions come from the computation [bi,bk∗]=(UU∗−VV∗)ik[b_i, b_k^*] = (UU^* - VV^*)_{ik} and [bi,bk]=(UVT−VUT)ik[b_i, b_k] = (UV^T - VU^T)_{ik}. Example: for n=1n = 1, b=cosh⁡(r) a+sinh⁡(r) a∗b = \cosh(r)\, a + \sinh(r)\, a^* with r∈ℝr \in \R is a bosonic Bogoliubov transformation, since cosh⁡2r−sinh⁡2r=1\cosh^2 r - \sinh^2 r = 1; it is the single-mode squeezing transformation. Non-example: b=a+a∗b = a + a^* has U=V=1U = V = 1, so UU∗−VV∗=0≠1UU^* - VV^* = 0 \ne 1; indeed bb is self-adjoint and [b,b∗]=0[b, b^*] = 0. For fermions with n=1n = 1, b=u a+v a∗b = u\, a + v\, a^* gives {b,b∗}=∣u∣2+∣v∣2\set{b, b^*} = \abs{u}^2 + \abs{v}^2 and {b,b}=2uv\set{b, b} = 2uv, so it is a Bogoliubov transformation only if one of u,vu, v is 00, as for the particle-hole exchange b=a∗b = a^*. A genuine fermionic mixing needs two modes: b1=u a1+v a2∗b_1 = u\, a_1 + v\, a_2^* and b2=u a2−v a1∗b_2 = u\, a_2 - v\, a_1^* with ∣u∣2+∣v∣2=1\abs{u}^2 + \abs{v}^2 = 1 satisfy the conditions, since here U=uIU = uI and VV is antisymmetric. If V=0V = 0, the condition says that UU is a unitary matrix, and the transformation is an ordinary change of one-particle basis.
