Definition

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space, and let NN be a bounded normal operator on HH with spectrum σ(N)\sigma(N). Let EE be the projection-valued measure of NN given by the spectral theorem for bounded normal operators, and write Ex,y(B)=⟨E(B)x,y⟩E_{x,y}(B) = \ip{E(B) x}{y}. For a bounded Borel measurable function f ⁣:σ(N)→ℂf \colon \sigma(N) \to \C, let f(N)f(N) be the unique bounded operator on HH with ⟨f(N)x,y⟩=∫σ(N)f(λ) dEx,y(λ)for all x,y∈H.\ip{f(N) x}{y} = \int_{\sigma(N)} f(\lambda) \, d E_{x,y}(\lambda) \quad \text{for all } x, y \in H. The map f↦f(N)f \mapsto f(N), from the bounded Borel functions on σ(N)\sigma(N) to the bounded operators on HH, is the Borel functional calculus of NN.

Remarks

The map f↦f(N)f \mapsto f(N) is linear and multiplicative, sends f‾\overline{f} to f(N)∗f(N)^*, and satisfies ∥f(N)∥≤sup⁡σ(N)∣f∣\norm{f(N)} \le \sup_{\sigma(N)} \abs{f}. For f(λ)=λf(\lambda) = \lambda it gives NN, and on continuous functions it agrees with the continuous functional calculus. If fn→ff_n \to f pointwise with sup⁡nsup⁡σ(N)∣fn∣<∞\sup_n \sup_{\sigma(N)} \abs{f_n} < \infty, then fn(N)x→f(N)xf_n(N) x \to f(N) x for every x∈Hx \in H. Example: for a Borel set BB, the indicator function 1B1_B gives 1B(N)=E(B)1_B(N) = E(B), the spectral projection of NN for BB. For instance, if NN is the multiplication by tt on L2([0,1])L^2([0,1]), then f(N)f(N) is the multiplication by f(t)f(t). Non-example: let NN be the diagonal operator Nen=en/nN e_n = e_n / n on ℓ2\ell^2, so σ(N)={1/n:n≥1}∪{0}\sigma(N) = \set{1/n : n \ge 1} \cup \set{0}. The function f(λ)=1/λf(\lambda) = 1/\lambda for λ≠0\lambda \ne 0, f(0)=0f(0) = 0, is Borel but not bounded, and the formula would give f(N)en=nenf(N) e_n = n e_n, which is not a bounded operator. Changing ff on a set BB with E(B)=0E(B) = 0 does not change f(N)f(N). For unbounded self-adjoint operators, the same formula defines f(A)f(A) for every bounded Borel function on ℝ\R, and for unbounded ff on a suitable dense domain.
