Builds on Schrödinger operatorLimit-point and limit-circleWeyl–Titchmarsh theory
Statement
Let be integrable on each interval with . Assume that both Schrödinger operators are in the limit-point case at . Let and be their Weyl–Titchmarsh functions. If for all , then almost everywhere on .
Remarks
The function determines the spectral measure through its Herglotz representation, and the spectral measure determines by Gelfand–Levitan theory; this gives one proof when is regular enough. Example: if for all non-real , then almost everywhere, since this is the -function of . The hypothesis cannot be weakened to equality of the spectra: in general the spectrum alone does not determine . There is also a local version: if decays fast enough as along suitable rays, then on an initial interval .

For a student
This is the basic uniqueness result of inverse spectral theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. It sits beside the Gelfand–Levitan reconstruction, which turns the same data into an explicit formula for . The local version shows that the asymptotic behaviour of for large already determines on an initial interval.
