Statement
Let be a finite group and let be a prime. Let be a -block of , that is, a block of the group algebra of over an algebraically closed field of characteristic . Let be a defect group of . Write and . Each complex irreducible character in has degree with -part for an integer , the height of . Then every irreducible character in has height if and only if is abelian.
Remarks
Richard Brauer posed the conjecture in 1955. For the principal block, a defect group is a Sylow -subgroup of . The direction "if is abelian, then all heights are zero" was proved by Kessar and Malle in 2013, using the classification of finite simple groups. The converse direction was proved by Malle, Navarro, Schaeffer Fry and Tiep, so the conjecture is now a theorem. For -solvable groups the conjecture was proved earlier by Gluck and Wolf.
