K-theory Operator algebras and K-theory Concept

Brown–Douglas–Fillmore theory

Summary

Brown–Douglas–Fillmore theory, or BDF theory, classifies extensions of the algebra C(X)C(X) of continuous functions on a compact metric space XX by the compact operators. Such an extension is the same as an injective unital ∗*-homomorphism from C(X)C(X) into the Calkin algebra. Their classes form an abelian group Ext⁡(X)\operatorname{Ext}(X). BDF showed that Ext⁡\operatorname{Ext} is a homology theory, now identified with odd K-homology. It solved the question of which essentially normal operators are compact perturbations of normal operators: for X⊆ℂX \subseteq \C the obstruction is the Fredholm index.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
