Description
Let be an infinite-dimensional separable complex Hilbert space. Let be the algebra of bounded operators on , and let be the ideal of compact operators in it. The Calkin algebra of is the quotient . It carries the quotient norm and the induced product. Its involution is , where is the quotient map.
Remarks
Since is a closed two-sided ideal of that is closed under adjoints, is a unital C*-algebra. Calkin showed that for separable , is the only closed two-sided ideal of other than and , so is a simple C*-algebra. An operator is Fredholm exactly when is invertible in . The spectrum of in is the essential spectrum of . The algebra is infinite-dimensional and not separable as a normed space. The construction makes sense for any Hilbert space, but for non-separable the ideal is no longer the only nontrivial closed ideal.
