Statement

Let XX and YY be Banach spaces, and let T ⁣:X→YT \colon X \to Y be a bounded linear map. Then TT is a Fredholm operator if and only if there is a bounded linear map S ⁣:Y→XS \colon Y \to X such that ST−IXST - I_X and TS−IYTS - I_Y are compact operators.

Remarks

If TT is Fredholm, choose closed complements X=ker⁡T⊕X0X = \ker T \oplus X_0 and Y=T(X)⊕Y0Y = T(X) \oplus Y_0, with Y0Y_0 finite-dimensional. Then TT maps X0X_0 bijectively onto T(X)T(X), and SS can be taken as its inverse on T(X)T(X) and 00 on Y0Y_0. With this choice, IX−STI_X - ST and IY−TSI_Y - TS are projections onto ker⁡T\ker T and Y0Y_0, so they are even finite-rank operators. Conversely, if ST=IX+KST = I_X + K with KK compact, then ker⁡T⊆ker⁡(IX+K)\ker T \subseteq \ker(I_X + K) is finite-dimensional, and TS=IY+K′TS = I_Y + K' shows that T(X)⊇(IY+K′)(Y)T(X) \supseteq (I_Y + K')(Y) has finite codimension. For a Hilbert space HH, the theorem says that T∈B(H)T \in B(H) is Fredholm if and only if its image is invertible in the Calkin algebra B(H)/K(H)B(H)/K(H). Example: the right shift SS on ℓ2\ell^2 and the left shift S∗S^* satisfy S∗S=IS^* S = I and SS∗=I−PS S^* = I - P, where PP is the rank-one projection onto the first coordinate, so SS is Fredholm.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem turns Fredholm theory into algebra: Fredholm operators are the preimages of the invertible elements of a quotient algebra. From this view, it follows at once that compact perturbations of Fredholm operators are Fredholm, and that products of Fredholm operators are Fredholm. It also leads to the essential spectrum of an operator TT on a Hilbert space, the spectrum of its image in the Calkin algebra.
