Operator theory Compact and Fredholm operators Concept

Ideal of compact operators

Summary

The compact operators on a Hilbert space HH form a set 𝒦(H)\mathcal{K}(H). It is a norm-closed two-sided ideal of the algebra ℬ(H)\mathcal{B}(H) of bounded operators, closed under taking adjoints. It is the norm closure of the finite-rank operators, and it is a C*-algebra in its own right. For a separable infinite-dimensional HH, it is the only closed two-sided ideal of ℬ(H)\mathcal{B}(H) other than {0}\set{0} and ℬ(H)\mathcal{B}(H), a theorem of Calkin. The quotient ℬ(H)/𝒦(H)\mathcal{B}(H)/\mathcal{K}(H) is the Calkin algebra, the setting of Fredholm theory.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
