Description

Let ℓ2(ℕ)\ell^2(\N) be the Hilbert space of square-summable sequences, with orthonormal basis e0,e1,e2,…e_0, e_1, e_2, \ldots. The unilateral shift is the operator SS with Sen=en+1S e_n = e_{n+1} for all nn. The Toeplitz algebra 𝒯\mathcal{T} is the C*-subalgebra of the algebra of bounded operators B(ℓ2(ℕ))B(\ell^2(\N)) generated by SS. It is the norm closure of the set of polynomials in SS and S∗S^*. It is a C*-algebra by construction. Identify ℓ2(ℕ)\ell^2(\N) with the Hardy space H2H^2 of the unit circle. Then 𝒯\mathcal{T} is the C*-algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators TfT_f with continuous symbol ff.

Check that 𝒯\mathcal{T} contains the compact operators: S∗S=1S^* S = 1, and P=1−SS∗P = 1 - S S^* is the projection onto ℂe0\C e_0. Then SmP(S∗)nS^m P (S^*)^n is the rank-one operator sending ene_n to eme_m and the other basis vectors to 00. These matrix units lie in 𝒯\mathcal{T}, and the norm closure of their span is the ideal of compact operators KK.

Remarks

The quotient 𝒯/K\mathcal{T} / K is isomorphic to the algebra C(𝕋)C(\mathbb{T}) of continuous functions on the unit circle, by a map that sends the class of TfT_f to ff. This gives the exact sequence 0→K→𝒯→C(𝕋)→00 \to K \to \mathcal{T} \to C(\mathbb{T}) \to 0, often called the Toeplitz extension. Coburn's theorem states that the C*-algebra generated by any isometry that is not unitary is isomorphic to 𝒯\mathcal{T}, by an isomorphism that sends the isometry to SS. The index of the Fredholm operator TfT_f, for a continuous nowhere-vanishing symbol ff, is minus the winding number of ff around 00.
