Definition
Let be a Banach space and let be the space of bounded linear operators on . A -semigroup (strongly continuous semigroup) on is a map such that:
- , the identity operator;
- for all ;
- for every .
Its generator is the operator given by , with domain the set of for which this limit exists.
Remarks
Conditions 1 and 2 say that is a monoid homomorphism from into the multiplicative semigroup .
Example: for a bounded operator , , the exponential series, is a -semigroup with generator ; here even in operator norm.
Example: on with , the left shifts form a -semigroup. Condition 3 holds because translation is continuous in norm for , which follows by approximation with continuous functions of compact support. The generator is on the Sobolev space .
Non-example: the same shifts on fail condition 3. For the indicator function of and , equals in absolute value on , so .
Every -semigroup satisfies for some constants and , and its generator is closed and densely defined.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
