Caputo fractional derivative
Builds on Riemann–Liouville integralGamma functionHigher derivative
Definition
Let be real numbers and let be a real number that is not an integer. Let . Let have continuous derivatives such that is absolutely continuous, so that exists almost everywhere and is integrable. The Caputo fractional derivative of order of is that is, the Riemann–Liouville integral applied to the higher derivative . Here is the gamma function. For an integer , one sets .
Remarks
Example: let , , so , and . Then and . For a constant , and the Caputo derivative is . Non-example: the Riemann–Liouville derivative is not , so it does not agree with the Caputo derivative on constants. In general, under the hypotheses above, the Caputo derivative equals the Riemann–Liouville derivative of .
