Definition
Let be a root system in a Euclidean space with inner product . Let be a base of simple roots in a fixed order. The Cartan matrix of with respect to is the matrix with entries where is the coroot of .
Remarks
The diagonal entries are , the other entries lie in , and if and only if . Example: for with and , one has , and . So and , and . Non-example: is not the Cartan matrix of a root system, since would force and to be proportional, which two simple roots never are. Some authors, for example in the theory of Kac–Moody algebras, use the transpose convention . A different reordering of conjugates by a permutation matrix, and a different base gives the same matrix up to such a reordering. This notion is not the Cartan matrix of an algebra in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras.
