Definition
Use units where the gravitational constant and the speed of light equal . Let be the Kerr metric with mass and rotation parameter , in Boyer–Lindquist coordinates . Let be a geodesic with momentum covector , and set The Carter constant of is It is constant along .
Remarks
Example: for the Kerr metric is the Schwarzschild metric, and where is the squared total angular momentum. Both and are conserved by spherical symmetry, so is conserved; an equatorial orbit has .
Non-example: alone is not conserved, even for . On an inclined circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole, vanishes at the highest and lowest points and is nonzero in between.
Equivalent form: many texts use instead. Then for a symmetric Killing tensor , and the conservation of along geodesics follows from the Killing tensor equation . The constants , , come from the metric and the Killing vector fields and .
