Definition

Let 𝔀\mathfrak{g} be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan subalgebra π”₯\mathfrak{h} and a choice of positive roots Ξ¦+\Phi^+. Let 𝔫+=⨁α∈Φ+𝔀α\mathfrak{n}^+ = \bigoplus_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \mathfrak{g}_\alpha, so that π”Ÿ=π”₯βŠ•π”«+\mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{h} \oplus \mathfrak{n}^+ is a Borel subalgebra. Category π’ͺ\mathcal{O} is the full subcategory of the category of 𝔀\mathfrak{g}-modules whose objects are the modules MM such that:

  1. MM is finitely generated as a module over the universal enveloping algebra U(𝔀)U(\mathfrak{g}).
  2. MM is the direct sum of its weight spaces MΞΌM_\mu, μ∈π”₯βˆ—\mu \in \mathfrak{h}^*.
  3. MM is locally 𝔫+\mathfrak{n}^+-finite: for each v∈Mv \in M, the subspace U(𝔫+)vU(\mathfrak{n}^+) v is finite-dimensional.

Remarks

Example: a Verma module M(Ξ»)M(\lambda) lies in π’ͺ\mathcal{O}. It is generated by one vector, it is the direct sum of its weight spaces, and its weights lie in Ξ»βˆ’β„€β‰₯0Ξ¦+\lambda - \Z_{\ge 0}\Phi^+ with finite-dimensional weight spaces. Let vv be a weight vector of weight ΞΌ\mu. Then U(𝔫+)vU(\mathfrak{n}^+) v lies in the sum of the finitely many weight spaces of weights between ΞΌ\mu and Ξ»\lambda, so it is finite-dimensional. Every finite-dimensional 𝔀\mathfrak{g}-module also lies in π’ͺ\mathcal{O}. Non-example: with π”Ÿβˆ’=π”₯βŠ•π”«βˆ’\mathfrak{b}^- = \mathfrak{h} \oplus \mathfrak{n}^-, the lowest weight module U(𝔀)βŠ—U(π”Ÿβˆ’)β„‚Ξ»U(\mathfrak{g}) \otimes_{U(\mathfrak{b}^-)} \C_\lambda satisfies clauses 1 and 2. It fails clause 3, since U(𝔫+)U(\mathfrak{n}^+) acts freely on its generator, so U(𝔫+)vU(\mathfrak{n}^+) v is infinite-dimensional. In π’ͺ\mathcal{O} each weight space is finite-dimensional, each module has finite length, and the simple objects are the modules L(Ξ»)L(\lambda), λ∈π”₯βˆ—\lambda \in \mathfrak{h}^*. π’ͺ\mathcal{O} is abelian, has enough projectives, and is the direct sum of subcategories indexed by central characters.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
