Associative rings and algebras Example
Category of rings
Builds on RingRing homomorphism
Example
The category of rings has the rings with identity as objects and the ring homomorphisms that send to as morphisms. Composition is the composition of maps, and the identity of is . This is a category. A composite of two maps that preserve sums, products and again preserves them, and identity maps preserve them, so composites and identities are morphisms. Composition of maps is associative.
Remarks
The ring is an initial object: for each ring the only homomorphism sends to . The zero ring is a terminal object, since every ring has exactly one map to it. The zero ring is not initial, because a homomorphism from it must send to , which fails when is nonzero; so has no zero object. The product is the direct product with componentwise operations. The commutative rings form a full subcategory , in which the coproduct of and is the tensor product . The inclusion is an epimorphism of that is not surjective: two homomorphisms out of that agree on agree on all fractions .
