Builds on Hermitian matrixEigenvalueCourant–Fischer min-max theorem
Statement
Let , and let be an Hermitian matrix with eigenvalues . Let be an complex matrix with , and let , with eigenvalues . Then, for , In particular, if is obtained from by deleting row and column for some , then
Remarks
Both inequalities follow from the Courant–Fischer min-max theorem. A subspace of of dimension maps to the subspace of of dimension , and preserves the Rayleigh quotient: . So the max-min for runs over fewer subspaces than the one for , which gives . The min-max form gives the other inequality.
Example: has eigenvalues and . Deleting the second row and column leaves , and indeed .

For a student
Interlacing is used to bound eigenvalues of graphs: the adjacency matrix of an induced subgraph is a principal submatrix. Applied repeatedly, it compares the eigenvalues of with those of each of its principal submatrices. The converse holds too: any two interlacing sequences arise from a Hermitian matrix and a principal submatrix of size one less.
