Builds on Hermitian matrixEigenvalueRayleigh quotientLinear subspaceDimension
Statement
Let be an Hermitian matrix with eigenvalues , listed with multiplicity. For with , let be the Rayleigh quotient. Then, for each , where runs over the linear subspaces of of the given dimension.
Remarks
Let be an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors with . On the span of , the Rayleigh quotient is at least , so the max-min is at least . Every subspace of dimension meets the span of in a nonzero vector, by counting dimensions, and there . So the max-min is exactly ; the min-max form is proved in the same way.
For it gives , and for it gives . For , for real , which takes all values in .
The Hermitian hypothesis is needed: for a non-Hermitian matrix the eigenvalues need not be real, and need not be real either.

For a student
The theorem turns questions about eigenvalues into questions about subspaces. It gives the Cauchy interlacing theorem and Weyl's inequality in a few lines. The real symmetric case is the same, with and . A version holds for compact self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces.
