Center of a ring

Builds on RingSubring

Definition

Let RR be a ring. The center of RR is the set Z(R)={z∈R:zr=rz for all r∈R}.Z(R) = \set{z \in R : zr = rz \text{ for all } r \in R}.

Remarks

Z(R)Z(R) is a commutative subring of RR, and RR is commutative if and only if Z(R)=RZ(R) = R. Example: for a field KK and n≥1n \ge 1, the center of Mn(K)M_n(K) is the set of scalar matrices cIncI_n with c∈Kc \in K. The check: a matrix ZZ that commutes with every matrix unit EijE_{ij} satisfies ZEij=EijZZ E_{ij} = E_{ij} Z; comparing entries shows that ZZ is diagonal with equal diagonal entries. Non-example: for n≥2n \ge 2, the matrix E11E_{11} is not in the center of Mn(K)M_n(K), since E11E12=E12E_{11} E_{12} = E_{12} but E12E11=0E_{12} E_{11} = 0. Some authors write C(R)C(R) for the center.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
