Example

The Chaplygin sleigh is a rigid body that moves on a horizontal plane. It rests on the plane at a knife edge and at other points that slide without friction. The knife edge forbids motion of its contact point perpendicular to the blade. Let (x,y)(x, y) be the contact point of the blade and θ\theta the angle of the blade with the xx-axis. Let m>0m > 0 be the mass and I>0I > 0 the moment of inertia about the centre of mass. Let a≠0a \ne 0 be the signed distance from the contact point to the centre of mass, measured along the blade. The configuration space is ℝ2×S1\R^2 \times S^1 with coordinates (x,y,θ)(x, y, \theta), and the constraint is −x˙sin⁡θ+y˙cos⁡θ=0.-\dot x \sin\theta + \dot y \cos\theta = 0. The vector fields (cos⁡θ,sin⁡θ,0)(\cos\theta, \sin\theta, 0) and (0,0,1)(0, 0, 1) span the allowed velocities, and their Lie bracket (−sin⁡θ,cos⁡θ,0)(-\sin\theta, \cos\theta, 0) is not in their span. So the constraint is not integrable, and the sleigh is a nonholonomic system.

Remarks

Write vv for the speed of the contact point along the blade and ω=θ˙\omega = \dot\theta. The equations of motion are v˙=a ω2,ω˙=−maI+ma2 v ω.\dot v = a\, \omega^2, \qquad \dot\omega = -\frac{m a}{I + m a^2}\, v\, \omega. They conserve the kinetic energy E=12mv2+12(I+ma2) ω2E = \frac12 m v^2 + \frac12 (I + m a^2)\, \omega^2: its derivative is mavω2−mavω2=0m a v \omega^2 - m a v \omega^2 = 0. Take a>0a > 0; then vv never decreases, and if ω≠0\omega \ne 0 initially, ω→0\omega \to 0 and v→2E/mv \to \sqrt{2E/m} as t→∞t \to \infty. So the sleigh ends up moving in a straight line with its centre of mass ahead of the blade, whatever the initial spin. This shows a feature of nonholonomic systems: the energy is conserved, but phase space volume is not, and the motion has attracting states.
