Character space
Builds on Continuous dual spaceWeak topology
Definition
Let be a commutative complex Banach algebra. A character of is a nonzero linear map with for all . The character space of is the set of characters of . Each character is continuous with , so is a subset of the continuous dual space . The topology on is the relative weak-* topology, the weak topology of the maps , .
Remarks
Other names are the maximal ideal space and the Gelfand spectrum, written or . The space is locally compact and Hausdorff. If has a unit, then for every character, is weak-* closed in the unit ball of , and so it is compact by the Banach–Alaoglu theorem. For unital , the map is a bijection from onto the set of maximal ideals of ; the Gelfand–Mazur theorem shows that each quotient is .
Example: let be a compact Hausdorff space and with the sup norm. For , the evaluation is linear and multiplicative, and , so it is a character. Every character of has this form, and is a homeomorphism from onto .
Non-example: on , the map is linear and nonzero but not multiplicative. For one has , while .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
