Functional analysis Duality for topological vector spaces Concept
Weak topology
Summary
Let be a dual pair. The weak topology is the coarsest topology on making every map continuous. For a topological vector space , the weak topology is , defined by its continuous linear forms, and the weak-* topology on is . Weak topologies have fewer open sets than norm topologies, so more sets are compact; this is the content of the Banach–Alaoglu theorem.
