Weak topology
Builds on Dual pairTopology generated by a family of seminormsContinuous dual space
Definition
Let be or , and let be a dual pair over . The weak topology on is the topology generated by the family of seminorms , . Let be a Hausdorff locally convex space with continuous dual , paired by . The weak topology of is , and the weak-* topology of is .
Remarks
is the coarsest topology on for which every map , , is continuous; it is a Hausdorff locally convex topology. A net converges to in if and only if for every . The continuous linear forms on are exactly the maps with . Example: in , the unit vectors converge to in , since for each . Non-example: on , the norm topology makes every map continuous. But it is not the coarsest such topology, so it is not the weak topology: the sequence converges weakly but not in norm.
