Functional analysis Normed and Banach spaces Theorem
Goldstine theorem
Builds on Normed vector spaceBidual and canonical embeddingWeak topologyDense set
Statement
Let be a normed vector space over or , with closed unit ball . Let be the canonical embedding into the bidual. Let be the closed unit ball of . Then is dense in for the weak* topology of , the weak topology defined by the functionals for .
Remarks
The weak* closure of is convex and lies in , since is weak*-closed. If some were not in , the Hahn–Banach separation theorem in with the weak* topology would give with . This contradicts .
For , with , the theorem says that every sequence with is a weak* limit of elements of the unit ball of . Indeed the truncations converge to against every element of .

For a student
Combined with the Banach–Alaoglu theorem, the theorem shows that a Banach space is reflexive exactly when its closed unit ball is weakly compact. It is also the key step in the proof of the Milman–Pettis theorem. In general the approximation needs nets, not sequences; for separable sequences suffice.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
