Statement

Let XX be a topological vector space over ℝ\R, and let A,B⊆XA, B \subseteq X be nonempty disjoint convex sets.

  1. If AA is open, then there are a continuous linear functional f ⁣:X→ℝf \colon X \to \R and a real number tt such that f(a)<t≤f(b)f(a) < t \le f(b) for all a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B.
  2. If XX is a locally convex space, AA is compact and BB is closed, then the sets can be strictly separated. There are a continuous linear functional f ⁣:X→ℝf \colon X \to \R and real numbers s<ts < t such that f(a)<sf(a) < s and f(b)>tf(b) > t for all a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B.

Remarks

For part 1, the set C=A−B+x0C = A - B + x_0, with x0∈B−Ax_0 \in B - A fixed, is an open convex neighbourhood of 00 that misses x0x_0. Its Minkowski functional pp is sublinear, and the Hahn–Banach theorem extends the functional λx0↦λ\lambda x_0 \mapsto \lambda to a linear f≤pf \le p; then f<1=f(x0)f < 1 = f(x_0) on CC, which gives the separation. Part 2 reduces to part 1: compactness of AA gives a convex open neighbourhood UU of 00 with (A+U)∩B=∅(A + U) \cap B = \emptyset. For a complex space, apply the theorem to the underlying real space and take the real part of a complex functional. The hypotheses matter: in ℝ2\R^2 the closed convex sets A={(x,y):y≤0}A = \set{(x, y) : y \le 0} and B={(x,y):x>0, y≥1/x}B = \set{(x, y) : x > 0,\ y \ge 1/x} are disjoint, but no line separates them strictly, so part 2 needs compactness of one set.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the geometric form of the Hahn–Banach theorem. It shows that a closed convex set in a locally convex space is the intersection of the closed half-spaces that contain it. Hence closed convex sets are closed for the weak topology, which is the key step in Mazur's lemma. It is also the main tool in the proofs of the Krein–Milman theorem, the Goldstine theorem and the bipolar theorem.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
