Functional analysis Hahn-Banach and convexity Lemma
Mazur's lemma
Builds on Normed vector spaceWeak topologyAffine combination
Statement
Let be a normed vector space over or . Let be a sequence in that converges to in the weak topology. For each there are an integer and real numbers for , with , with the following property. The convex combinations converge to in norm.
Remarks
Fix and let be the norm closure of the convex hull of . By the Hahn–Banach separation theorem, a norm-closed convex set is weakly closed, so is weakly closed. Since weakly and for , the limit lies in . Hence some convex combination of finitely many with satisfies .
In the sequence space , the unit vectors converge weakly to but for all . The averages have , so they tend to in norm, as the lemma predicts.

For a student
The lemma is a quantitative form of the fact that a convex set has the same closure in the norm topology and in the weak topology. It is used in the calculus of variations and in partial differential equations: one obtains a weak limit from compactness. Then one uses the lemma to pass to strong limits of averages, which interact well with convex functionals. For example, it shows that a convex lower semicontinuous functional on a Banach space is weakly lower semicontinuous.
