Cheeger constant

Builds on GraphConnected graph

Definition

Let G=(V,E)G = (V, E) be a finite graph with ∣V∣≥2\abs{V} \ge 2. For S⊆VS \subseteq V, let ∂S\partial S be the set of edges with one end in SS and the other end in V∖SV \setminus S. The Cheeger constant of GG is h(G)=min⁡{∣∂S∣∣S∣:S⊆V, 1≤∣S∣≤∣V∣2}.h(G) = \min \set{ \frac{\abs{\partial S}}{\abs{S}} : S \subseteq V, \ 1 \le \abs{S} \le \frac{\abs{V}}{2} }.

Remarks

Example: in the complete graph KnK_n with n≥2n \ge 2, a set SS of size kk has k(n−k)k(n - k) edges leaving it, so the ratio is n−kn - k. The minimum over 1≤k≤n/21 \le k \le n/2 gives h(Kn)=n−⌊n/2⌋=⌈n/2⌉h(K_n) = n - \floor{n/2} = \ceil{n/2}. For the path with nn vertices, the first ⌊n/2⌋\floor{n/2} vertices have one edge leaving them, so h≤1/⌊n/2⌋h \le 1/\floor{n/2}. The bound ∣S∣≤∣V∣/2\abs{S} \le \abs{V}/2 cannot be dropped: for S=VS = V the ratio would be 00 for every graph. h(G)>0h(G) > 0 if and only if GG is connected. If GG is dd-regular and λ2\lambda_2 is the second largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix, then d−λ22≤h(G)≤2d(d−λ2)\frac{d - \lambda_2}{2} \le h(G) \le \sqrt{2d(d - \lambda_2)}. The notation h(G)h(G) and the names edge expansion and isoperimetric number are also used.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
