Chromatic polynomial
Definition
Let be a finite graph. For each natural number , let be the number of colourings of with the set of colours . There is a unique polynomial whose value at each natural number is . It is the chromatic polynomial of .
Remarks
For the path graph , . For the complete graph, . For an edge , the deletion–contraction rule says . Here merges the two ends of . The chromatic number is the smallest positive integer with .
Explanations

The chromatic polynomial counts the proper colourings of a graph with colours, for each . George David Birkhoff introduced it in 1912 to study the four colour problem.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
