Builds on RingIdempotent elementUnit of a ring
Definition
Let be a ring with unit . An element is clean if for an idempotent (so ) and a unit of . The ring is clean if every element of is clean.
Remarks
Example: a local ring , one whose non-units form a two-sided ideal . If is a unit, then . If , then , since otherwise ; so is a unit and . Non-example: the ring , whose idempotents are and units are . The sums are , so is not clean. Every homomorphic image of a clean ring is clean, since idempotents and units map to idempotents and units.
