Statement

Let (R,π”ͺ)(R, \mathfrak m) be a complete Noetherian local ring with residue field k=R/π”ͺk = R/\mathfrak m.

  1. Suppose that RR contains a field. Then RR contains a coefficient field, a subfield KK such that Kβ†’Rβ†’kK \to R \to k is an isomorphism. Moreover Rβ‰…k[ ⁣[X1,…,Xn] ⁣]/JR \cong k[\![X_1, \dots, X_n]\!]/J, a quotient of a formal power series ring, for some nn and some ideal JJ.
  2. If RR contains a field and RR is a regular local ring of Krull dimension dd, then Rβ‰…k[ ⁣[X1,…,Xd] ⁣]R \cong k[\![X_1, \dots, X_d]\!].
  3. In general, let C=kC = k if kk has characteristic 00. If kk has characteristic p>0p > 0, let CC be a complete discrete valuation ring of characteristic 00 with maximal ideal pCpC and residue field kk. Such a ring exists. Then RR is isomorphic to a quotient C[ ⁣[X1,…,Xn] ⁣]/JC[\![X_1, \dots, X_n]\!]/J for some nn and some ideal JJ.

Remarks

The hard part is the existence of a coefficient field, or of a coefficient ring in the general case. Once it exists, choose generators x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n of π”ͺ\mathfrak m and send XiX_i to xix_i. This map from the power series ring is surjective because RR is complete and π”ͺ\mathfrak m is finitely generated. In clause 2 the number of generators can be taken equal to dd. Then the kernel is 00, since a proper quotient of the domain k[ ⁣[X1,…,Xd] ⁣]k[\![X_1, \dots, X_d]\!] has dimension less than dd. A complete local ring RR contains a field if and only if RR and kk have the same characteristic. When kk is perfect of characteristic p>0p > 0, the ring CC can be taken to be the ring of Witt vectors W(k)W(k); for k=𝔽pk = \F_p this is β„€p\Z_p. Example: the completion of k[x,y](x,y)/(y2βˆ’x3)k[x, y]_{(x, y)}/(y^2 - x^3) at its maximal ideal is k[ ⁣[X,Y] ⁣]/(Y2βˆ’X3)k[\![X, Y]\!]/(Y^2 - X^3).

Going deeper

For a student

Together with the faithful flatness of completion, the theorem lets one reduce questions about Noetherian local rings to quotients of power series rings, where explicit computation is possible. It implies, for example, that complete Noetherian local rings are excellent and that they are quotients of regular local rings.
