Witt vectors

Summary

Fix a prime pp and a commutative ring AA. The ring W(A)W(A) of pp-typical Witt vectors consists of infinite sequences of elements of AA with a special addition and multiplication. These operations are built so that certain polynomial functions of the entries, the ghost components, turn them into ordinary addition and multiplication. The construction lifts rings of characteristic pp to characteristic 00: the Witt vectors of the finite field 𝔽p\F_p form the ring ℤp\Z_p of p-adic integers. Witt vectors are a basic tool in arithmetic geometry and in the theory of perfect fields of characteristic pp.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
