Commutative algebra Definition
Witt vectors
Definition
Let be a prime number and let be a commutative ring. For , the -th ghost polynomial is There are unique sequences of polynomials such that for every : The ring of -typical Witt vectors is the set of sequences with entries in , with the operations With these operations is a commutative ring with zero and identity .
Remarks
The first sum polynomials are and , which has integer coefficients. The ghost map is a ring homomorphism , and it is an isomorphism when is a unit in . A ring homomorphism induces by applying to each entry.
Example: is isomorphic to the ring of p-adic integers. For , compute in through ghost components: and . So and , which gives . Reducing modulo , in the sum is , which corresponds to .
Non-example: the componentwise addition on gives . This is not the Witt sum, because it does not respect the ghost components over .
The Teichmüller representative of is , and it satisfies .
