Definition
Let be a category with zero morphisms, and let be a morphism of . A cokernel of is an object with a morphism such that:
- ;
- for every morphism with there is a unique morphism with .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a coequalizer of and ; it is the kernel of in the opposite category. A cokernel is unique up to a unique isomorphism, is written , and is an epimorphism.
Example: in the category of modules over a ring, the quotient map is a cokernel of . If , then vanishes on and so induces a unique with . For multiplication by on the abelian group , the cokernel is the reduction .
Non-example: for multiplication by on , the map satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2. The reduction satisfies but does not factor through the zero group, since .
