Definition
Consider a material in continuum mechanics with constitutive equations in terms of a list of state variables. They give the specific free energy , the specific entropy , the stress and the heat flux. The Coleman–Noll procedure derives restrictions on these functions in three steps.
- Combine the energy balance with the Clausius–Duhem inequality to get a reduced dissipation inequality without the heat supply.
- Require this inequality in every process. The body force and heat supply are chosen so that the balances of momentum and energy hold.
- Expand the time derivative of by the chain rule. Where the inequality is affine in a rate that can take any value at an instant, set its coefficient to .
Remarks
Example: take a thermoelastic body with reference density , deformation gradient , temperature and referential temperature gradient . Let its first Piola–Kirchhoff stress and referential heat flux be functions of , like and . Step 1 gives Step 3 applies to the arbitrary rates , and , and gives that does not depend on , that , that , and that . Non-example: requiring the inequality only in equilibrium states, where all rates vanish, is not this procedure, and it gives none of these restrictions. The method is named after Bernard Coleman and Walter Noll.
