Definition
Let and be categories and let be a diagram. A colimit of is a cocone under , with , that satisfies the following condition. For every cocone under there is exactly one morphism with for every object of . The object is written or , and the are its injections.
Remarks
Equivalently, a colimit is an initial object of the category of cocones under , so it is unique up to unique isomorphism. A colimit of in is the same as a limit of the corresponding diagram in the opposite category. The colimit of the empty diagram is an initial object.
Example: in the category of sets, every diagram with small has a colimit. Let be the smallest equivalence relation on the disjoint union that identifies with for every . The colimit is the quotient . The injections send to its class, and a cocone induces , which is well defined by the cocone condition.
Non-example: for the diagram of two parallel functions with , the set with and is not a cocone, since ; so it cannot be a colimit.
