Communication complexity
Builds on Function
Definition
Let and be finite sets and let be a function. A deterministic protocol for is a rooted binary tree with these labels.
- Each internal node is owned by Alice or by Bob.
- An internal node owned by Alice carries a map , and one owned by Bob carries a map .
- Each leaf carries an output in .
On input , the run starts at the root. At each internal node it applies the map of the node to or to . It goes to the left child if the value is , and to the right child if it is . The protocol computes if for every the run ends at a leaf whose label is . The cost of the protocol is the depth of the tree, the number of bits sent in the worst case. The deterministic communication complexity is the least cost of a protocol that computes .
Remarks
Every has : Alice sends and Bob sends .
Example: let and let exactly when . Then . The lower bound holds because the inputs must reach distinct leaves labeled , and the protocol also needs leaves labeled .
Non-example: a "protocol" in which a leaf label depends on itself is not allowed by clause 3. The output must be determined by the bits sent, which both players see.
Randomized complexity allows random bits and errors of probability at most . For it is with private randomness and with shared randomness.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
