Commutant
Builds on Hilbert spaceAlgebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space
Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . The commutant of a subset is The bicommutant, or double commutant, of is .
Remarks
Example: let be the algebra of diagonal matrices. If commutes with for distinct , then , so is diagonal; hence . Likewise, , since commuting with all matrix units forces to be scalar.
Non-example: the matrix unit does not lie in , because while .
For all subsets, , implies , and . The commutant is always a unital subalgebra of that is closed in the weak operator topology. If is closed under adjoints, then is also closed under adjoints, so is a von Neumann algebra. The same definition in any ring or algebra gives the centralizer of a subset.
