Commutative algebra Definition
Commutative algebra over a ring
Builds on Commutative ringRing homomorphismModule over a ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring. A commutative -algebra is a pair where is a commutative ring and is a ring homomorphism. The map is the structure map of the algebra. For and one writes . If and are commutative -algebras, an -algebra homomorphism is a ring homomorphism with .
Remarks
Example: for and , the reduction map is a ring homomorphism, so is a -algebra. Example: the polynomial ring with the inclusion of constants is an -algebra. Non-example: the ring of real matrices receives the ring homomorphism from . But is not commutative, so it is an associative -algebra and not a commutative one. Equivalent form: a commutative -algebra is a commutative ring with an -module structure such that for all and ; the structure map is then . The notion of a finite type algebra and the tensor product of algebras are built on this definition.
