Compact real form
Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra over . A compact real form of is a real form of whose Killing form is negative definite: for all nonzero .
Remarks
Example: , the skew-Hermitian matrices of trace , is a compact real form of . Its Killing form is , and for skew-Hermitian and nonzero, . Non-example: is a real form of but not a compact one, since has . A real semisimple Lie algebra has negative definite Killing form if and only if it is the Lie algebra of a compact Lie group. Every complex semisimple Lie algebra has a compact real form, and any two are conjugate under an automorphism of .
