Definition
Let be a Banach space over or , and let be a closed linear subspace of . The subspace is complemented in if there is a closed linear subspace of such that and . In other words, and are complementary subspaces.
Remarks
Equivalently, is complemented if and only if there is a continuous linear map with and , a bounded projection onto . Given such , take ; given , the algebraic projection onto along has closed graph, so it is continuous by the closed graph theorem. Example: in a Hilbert space every closed subspace is complemented by its orthogonal complement , which is closed with and equal to the whole space. Every finite-dimensional subspace of a Banach space is complemented: extend a dual basis by the Hahn–Banach theorem to build the projection. Non-example: is a closed subspace of that is not complemented; every closed subspace with has . A theorem of Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri says that a Banach space in which every closed subspace is complemented is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.
