Complete set of orthogonal idempotents
Builds on RingIdempotent element
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an integer. A complete set of orthogonal idempotents of is a family of elements of such that:
- each is an idempotent, that is, ;
- for all ;
- .
Remarks
Many authors also require each to be nonzero. Example: in over a field , the diagonal matrix units form a complete set of orthogonal idempotents. The check: equals if and otherwise, and . Non-example: in , the family consisting of alone satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but not clause 3, since . For any idempotent , the pair is a complete set of orthogonal idempotents. A complete set of orthogonal idempotents gives a decomposition of as a left module over itself.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
